Dicranum majus Greater Fork-moss found growing along Bell Brook valley, Wyre on Sunday 23 April 2023.

Dicranum majus plays a significant role in its ecosystem. As a moss, it helps retain moisture in the soil, preventing erosion and providing a suitable environment for other plant species to grow. Its dense growth also acts as a protective cover for small invertebrates, providing them with shelter and a source of food.

Additionally, this moss species contributes to nutrient cycling and carbon sequestration. Through photosynthesis, it absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and releases oxygen, making it an essential player in maintaining the delicate balance of our planet’s ecosystems.
